The Size of the Demand

There are 44.9 million US residents who speak Spanish at home, according to the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey [1]. Spanish speakers also make up the largest limited-English-proficient language group nationally, accounting for about 64% of the roughly 27 million Americans classified as limited English proficient [2]. That is not a niche audience, it is a demand curve large enough to affect nearly any consumer-facing business operating in the US.

The Coverage Gap Behind the Demand

87.1% of contact center leaders report having Spanish-speaking customers specifically, yet only 76.0% of those organizations formally offer Spanish-language customer support, a meaningful gap between awareness of demand and actual coverage [3]. More broadly, 86% of contact centers serve customers who are not native English speakers, while only 65.5% offer formal support in another language at all [3].

Why the Gap Has a Real Cost Attached

29% of businesses report losing customers specifically because they lack multilingual support, and 35% of customers say they would switch to a competing product if native-language support were not available [4]. On the flip side, 76% of consumers prefer buying products with information available in their native language, and 70% report feeling more loyal to companies that provide support in their own language [4][5]. This is exactly the kind of data explored further in why Spanish-language support matters for US brands, where the coverage gap and its cost are broken down in more depth.
