For Owner-Operated and Small-Team Businesses
When you cannot answer the phone, something else has to. For most small businesses that has meant voicemail or an answering service; the AI front desk is the third option, and it comes in two forms, with and without a person behind it. This page compares all of them on what matters to a caller and to you, with prices as observed on vendor pages on October 12, 2026.

| What the caller hears | A recording | A receptionist, after a ring or a hold | An AI that identifies itself, immediately | An AI that identifies itself, immediately, then a person when needed |
| Books an appointment | No | From a script, into your calendar if integrated | Yes, into your calendar, with a text confirmation | Yes, into your calendar, with a text confirmation |
| Answers questions | No | From a script | From your own documents and price list | From your own documents and price list |

The research is consistent about two things. Callers want to be answered: 78% have abandoned a business after an unanswered call and 82% say they will call a competitor if nobody answers (CallRail, 1,000 US consumers, 2025) 1. And callers want a person reachable and AI disclosed: 85% would rather speak to a real person, 85% want it clearly indicated when they are talking to AI, and 31% would hang up if connected to AI (AnswerConnect/OnePoll, 6,000 adults, 2026, vendor-commissioned) 10. Nearly 8 in 10 say AI should identify itself at the start of a call, and 22% would hang up if they realized mid-call they were speaking to AI 11.
Put together: an AI that hides what it is loses callers; an AI that discloses, resolves the routine, and hands off to a real person when asked keeps them. That is why the fourth column exists.
Voicemail is right for a business whose callers are almost all existing customers who will leave a message. For new business, it is the most expensive option in the table because of the calls it loses.
A human answering service is right when a message or a scripted booking is usually enough and the caller needs to hear a person. Its limits are the script and the hours, and Spanish coverage is often narrower than English; ReceptionHQ, for example, staffs its bilingual team 5am to 7pm Mountain time 2.
An AI-only front desk is right for a solo operator who wants routine calls booked and answered and is prepared to take the complicated ones personally. Its limit is the fallback: you or voicemail.
An AI front desk with a person behind it is right when complicated calls need to be resolved by someone who is not you, when a meaningful share of callers speak Spanish, or when you expect to grow into a team. Its distinguishing question is who the person is: a generalist receptionist billed per call, or a trained agent who can resolve the call and, later, become your team.
Redial’s AI front desk, IzzyOps (working name), is in preview, with commercial availability planned for late 2026 to early 2027. It is designed to sit in the fourth column: a digital agent that identifies itself, answers on the first ring 24/7 in English or Spanish, books into your calendar with a text confirmation, answers from your own documents, and hands off to a person with the conversation attached. The person can be you, your team, or a bilingual Redial agent in a US time zone who can become your dedicated program as you grow 12. Redial will publish pricing at commercial availability and measured results from pilots.
Is an AI receptionist better than an answering service?
For immediate answers and bookings from your own information, yes. For calls that need a person, it depends on who the person behind the AI is and what they know when they pick up. Hybrid options exist in both categories; compare on the fallback, not the AI.
Will callers hang up on an AI?
Some will: 31% say they would hang up if connected to AI 10 The hang-up risk is highest when the AI hides what it is or will not let the caller reach a person. Disclosure and a guaranteed human path address both.
How much does an AI front desk cost?
At the time of writing, AI-only tools range from about USD 15 to USD 299 a month and hybrid services with human backup from about USD 150 to USD 165 for entry tiers plus per-call or per-minute human charges 4 5 7 9. Compare on included units, not headline price. IzzyOps through Redial will publish pricing at commercial availability.
Can an AI front desk speak Spanish?
Some can. IzzyOps is designed to handle calls in English and Spanish, and in the Redial model the person behind it is bilingual too, which matters because Spanish coverage at answering services is often limited to certain hours.
Book a demo of IzzyOps (working name) and hear what the fourth column sounds like: the disclosure, the booking, the confirmation text, and a handoff to a person who already knows what the caller said. Commercial availability is planned for late 2026 to early 2027.
