Who Picks Up When the AI Can’t? AI-Only vs. AI Plus Receptionists vs. AI Plus a Team

Every AI phone product will transfer a call it cannot handle. The honest comparison between them is not about the AI. It is about who is on the other end of the transfer, where they are, what languages they speak, what hours they keep, what they know when they pick up, and what each escalation costs. This page compares the three models on exactly those terms.

IzzyOps (working name) answers on the first ring, books and resolves routine calls, and hands the rest to a real person with the full conversation already in hand. Commercial availability is planned for late 2026 to early 2027. See a demo call, including the handoff

The Three Models

AI-only tools. The digital agent answers, books, and answers questions; anything it cannot handle is transferred to the business owner or a staff member, or captured as a message. Examples at the time of writing include Goodcall (USD 79 to 299 a month by number of unique customers) [1], and the AI receptionists bundled into business phone systems such as Nextiva (USD 99 a month for 100 interactions) [2], Ooma (from USD 14.99 a month for 40 minutes) 3, and RingCentral 4, as well as field-service software such as Jobber, which transfers to the owner or sends a text alert 5.

AI plus the vendor’s receptionists. The digital agent answers first; calls it cannot handle go to the answering service’s own human receptionists. Examples include Smith.ai (USD 150 a month for 75 calls, with live North America-based receptionists as an add-on at a flat USD 3.00 per call) 6 7, Abby Connect (from USD 165 a month for 50 “Abby minutes,” with warm transfer to US-based receptionists in English and Spanish) 8 9, ReceptionHQ (from USD 10 for 10 calls, with a bilingual Spanish team available 5am to 7pm Mountain time) 10, and Go Answer (from USD 95 for 100 minutes, live receptionist add-on priced on request) 11. Even some pure AI vendors are adding this layer: Avoca launched a human-in-the-loop program in May 2026 with North America-based CSRs and warm transfers carrying caller, reason, address, and CRM status 12.

AI plus a dedicated team. The digital agent answers first; calls it cannot handle go to trained agents on a team that can also run the business’s full program as it grows. This is the IzzyOps-through-Redial model, with the handoff taken by a bilingual Redial agent in a US time zone 13. Among the BPOs and answering services reviewed for this page, no other provider was found marketing its own-branded AI front desk for small businesses with nearshore bilingual human backup and a staffed-program upgrade path.

How to Choose

Choose AI only if you are a solo operator who wants to take the important calls personally and is comfortable with voicemail as the fallback. Choose AI plus receptionists if you need a person to pick up during business hours and a message is usually enough. Choose AI plus a team if your handed-off calls need to be resolved rather than relayed, if a meaningful share of your callers speak Spanish, if you need coverage beyond standard hours, or if you expect to grow into a dedicated team and do not want to switch providers to get there. The graduation point tends to arrive when the AI is transferring more than it resolves, when volume justifies a dedicated person, or when you add locations; answering-service tiers typically end around 500 calls or 500 minutes a month 6 8, which is roughly where staffed programs begin.

How Redial Fits

Redial offers all three options on IzzyOps (working name) and will help you pick the one that fits, including AI only if that is right for you. What Redial adds that no software vendor or answering service can is the third option: a bilingual team of its own, 650+ seats in Mexico, 180+ in South Africa, and 350+ in the Philippines 14, that takes the handoff today and becomes your program when you need one. Pricing for the hybrid plans will be published at commercial availability; the comparison above is the basis on which they should be judged.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Several answering services pair AI with their own receptionists, some bilingual. What is distinctive about the Redial model is who the human is: a trained agent on a team that can also run your full program, rather than a generalist receptionist billed per call.

In the AI-plus-Redial option, yes: Redial’s Mexico teams are natively bilingual. Some answering services also offer Spanish, sometimes within limited hours; check the hours when you compare.

It depends on the model. Answering services typically charge per live call or per minute on top of the base plan. Redial’s hybrid plans will include human minutes, with pricing published at commercial availability. Compare on included units, not headline price.

When the AI is transferring more than it resolves, when call volume justifies a dedicated person, or when you add locations. The advantage of the AI-plus-team model is that the move does not require changing providers.
